Challenge

Carlisle Construction Materials, or CCM for short, a diversified manufacturer and supplier of premium building products and related technologies for the commercial and residential construction markets, was facing staffing challenges for several of their manufacturing roles.

Managers at CCM were struggling to fill these full-time roles with suitable candidates without the capability to consider alternative candidates who may require a non-traditional schedule.  Throughout the recruiting process, they found a sizable population of talent in the local area with a diverse range of backgrounds that were not interested in full-time opportunities at that point in their lives, for a variety of reasons.  Unfortunately, for CCM, a significant portion of this group was highly skilled and had a strong work ethic. CCM knew they needed to identify new approaches to attract different talent pools.

Solution

CCM collaborated with Gig and Take to develop an innovative approach aimed at rekindling the interest of individuals who were not initially inclined towards full-time roles.  CCM introduced a new twist on part-time work, using Gig and Take’s platform.  Through this new flexible worker pilot program, which launched in 1 of CCM’s locations, workers can set their own hours and choose shifts in 4-hour increments at varying times that match their preferences.

CCM’s flexible worker program is targeted towards candidates that join the company on a part-time basis. The onboarding process is streamlined and includes essential training to ensure that workers are well-versed in both job requirements and CCM policies.  The part-time “flex workers” become a pipeline of candidates for full-time conversions, if and when the worker’s need for part-time or a flexible schedule changes, which CCM found to be the case in a number of new hires.

One of CCM’s flex workers, Briann Shields, shared, “I’m a single mom of 3. I got my kids ready for school this morning, and dropped the baby off at the babysitter, and I came to work from 11am-3pm. I have plenty of time to pick the kids up after school and pick up the baby at the babysitter.”  Briann shared that her baby was born with a brachial plexus: no function in her right arm.  Briann, facing unique challenges with her baby's health, found flexibility crucial, enabling her to attend therapy appointments and various commitments while remaining engaged in the labor force. CCM’s Leadership and Gig and Take's flexible platform provided invaluable support during this period, and after successfully working as a flex worker, Briann happily accepted a full-time position with CCM once her baby completed physiotherapy appointments.

Results

“It was an easy decision to partner with Gig and Take because they provide a system solution that meets the needs and desires of both our managers and employees at CCM.  And our employee population, as well as the candidate pool, is looking for flexibility and work that fits into their lives in a more seamless way.  Gig and Take is helping us expand our talent pool and see the possibilities beyond normal shift schedules.”

1 year post implementation of Gig and Take’s app at 1 factory:

✔ $100k+ saved in overtime cost
✔ 40% of flex workers transitioned to full-time CCM employees
✔ 99% reliability (workers showed up on time to the shift they selected)
✔ Expansion across multiple sites in progress

Following implementation of the platform, the company continues to experience many benefits, and has saved over $100,000 in overtime costs.  CCM is actively engaged in collaboration with Gig and Take to extend the pilot to additional locations.  The platform offers supervisors real-time visibility into the acceptance of shifts by flexible workers, streamlines the process of quickly filling shifts to cover callouts, and has enhanced scheduling efficiency in the factory.

The flexible worker program created an opportunity for new workers to try various manufacturing jobs, learn more about CCM’s culture, and continues to provide workers with a pathway for potential employment if mutual interest and job openings align.  To date, 40% of flex workers have transitioned to full-time CCM positions.

This case study exemplifies the success of an innovative approach to creating a talent pipeline for full-time conversions with alternative candidates requiring non-traditional schedules.  Through the addition of a simple and intuitive, real-time application offered by Gig and Take, CCM gained access to a new talent pool of flexible workers.  As a recognized leader in the roofing industry for nearly a decade, CCM now also aspires to be a leader in championing flexibility for its front-line workers - a win-win-win for CCM, candidates and the local community.
